EU Approves Asylum Rejections Under "Safe Third Country" Framework

(MENAFN) In a decisive 396-226 vote with 30 abstentions, the European Parliament has authorized sweeping changes to asylum procedures Tuesday, enabling member states to rapidly reject protection requests under the "safe third country" framework.

The legislative package, approved during a plenary session in Strasbourg, empowers EU nations to dismiss asylum claims as inadmissible when applicants had opportunities to seek refuge elsewhere. The framework establishes protocols for outsourcing asylum processing to non-EU countries.

Countries can qualify as "safe" destinations based on applicants' existing connections—including familial bonds, shared language, or cultural links—or if asylum seekers previously passed through without requesting protection. Bilateral, multilateral, or EU-level pacts may delegate asylum evaluations to third nations, which must assess claims substantively, excluding unaccompanied children.

The measure builds upon an existing EU-wide roster of safe origin countries: Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia. Nationals from these seven nations will face expedited proceedings unless they prove credible persecution or severe harm risks.

EU candidate countries receive automatic safe designation for their citizens, barring evidence of armed conflict or systematic rights abuses. The European Commission will conduct ongoing monitoring and can suspend or revoke listings when conditions deteriorate. Individual member states retain authority to expand safe country designations domestically.

Left group co-chair Manon Aubry issued a stark warning ahead of the ballot during a press briefing: "Today will mark a dark day for human rights & the right to asylum. More than ever, this is a fortress. The EU will become a mass deportations machine," she said.

Key elements—including safe third country classifications and accelerated border screenings for applicants from low-recognition-rate nations—can take effect immediately, predating the June 2026 official implementation deadline.

Final adoption awaits the EU Council's formal approval.
